October 5, 1952: The well-known mystery series Inner Sanctum remained on air for 11 years. The notion of the program’s characteristic sound of a creaking door actually came from a door in the studio. One of the staffers innocently oiled the door before transmission, which compelled the sound man to produce the sound physically.
The anthology series was almost better known for its puns and morbid jokes. Sanctum captivated audiences with sound effects, a grim host in Raymond Johnson, and guest stars. Humor was added to keep listeners engaged.
